Quinceañera History

quinceañera, the celebration of a girl's 15th birthday, marking her passage from girlhood to womanhood; the term is also used for the celebrant herself. The quinceañera is both a religious and a social event that emphasizes the importance of family and society in the life of a young woman.

Back in the day of the Aztecs Indians, when a girl turned 15 she would be considered to be ready for marriage. This celebration of age turned to more of a celebratory event for a young girl turning into a women. Originating in Mexico, quinceaneras are now celebrated and practiced all over the world.

Traditional quinceañeras include 14 girls, called damas. They are similar to bridesmaids.

Other gifts might include a Bible, a rosary, a cross or a medal, which are religious gifts that would customarily be given during the thanksgiving Mass. Also, during the Mass, grandparents might give the quinceañera 15 red roses, with the stems signifying strength and the petals signifying sweetness [source: Mills].

Who pays for quinceañera? ›

This can vary widely, as the rules change with every different girl. Sometimes they will pay for one specific thing, such as the birthday cake, a piece of jewelry, or the dress. Other times, they will entirely pay the expenses for the religious part of the quinceañera, while the parents pay for the party.

The Traditional Last Doll is usually given to a girl by her father for her Quinceanera Party. The doll is usually dressed in the same fashion as the girl. After, the doll is thrown to the younger girls at the party, to prove the girl who has been given this doll is now grown up.

Another important tradition is for the quinceañera to choose a corte de honor (court of honor.) This group of friends is similar to a bride's wedding party and includes several female friends called damas and male friends called chambelanes.

Traditionally made up of 14 girls—damas—and 14 boys—chambelanes—these young people are usually the Quinceanera's friends or family and will perform a waltz during the celebration. More modern celebrations don't require as many damas and chambelanes, so there can be as few as 7 boys and 7 girls.

A typical celebration may last up to 6 hours—from the beginning of the Mass to the end of the party—during which the guests can enjoy food, games, and dancing to contemporary music or a performance by a live band.
